What are the Most Common Reasons for being put on Bed Rest?

By : Admin

Bed rest is one of the most common prescriptions during pregnancy.  While no woman ever wants to be put on bed rest, it is often helpful to you and to your baby for you to be put on bedrest.  In addition, there are specific things that you can do that will help you to cope with your bed rest.

There are some conditions that pretty much make it necessary for you to be put on bed rest.  If you are carrying twins or multiples, for example, you can almost guarantee that you will be put on bed rest.  If you are at risk for preterm labor, or if you have a condition that puts you at a risk for preterm labor such as a weak cervix, you will be put on bed rest.

With some conditions, you may or may not be put on bed rest depending on the severity of the condition and also on your health care provider's personal analysis.  For example, most women who have had a low-lying placenta (a condition known as placenta previa) will be put on bed rest.  Some women who have preeclampsia or pregnancy-induced hypertension will be put on bed rest to help keep your blood pressure at acceptable levels.  In some cases, if you have gestational diabetes you may also be put on bed rest.

There are things to help you cope with bedrest.  For example, it is important that you get on a routine while you are on bed rest.  By having and following a regular schedule, you will feel like you are more in control of your life.  You should also try to keep the things you need handy.  Keep a telephone, a telephone book, writing utensils and paper, a brush or comb and a mirror, books, magazines, remote controls, cosmetics, and/or a laptop computer with you in bed.  Try also to keep in touch with the rest of your family.  Ask your husband and older if they will eat breakfast in bed with you.  Call your long-lost aunt and see how she is doing.  Order gifts online or via the telephone for holidays such as Father’s day.

Finally, if you have been put on bed rest, it is important to keep perspective.  Remember that your bed rest will not last forever; when your baby is born healthy and happy, it will have all been worth it.
